Basic Principles Of Interior Design

Filed in: Internet Business by Kenneth Hilton on 01-16-10

In the interior design of any building, there are several important aspects that must be borne in mind. The under-mentioned fundamental guidelines, if adhered to, will take care of a number of these factors. Each of these has an important role to play and it may be used in several ways depending on the kind of place you are working on.

Unity: According to this, the whole space should be considered as a single unit, which has been partitioned through walls, and this should be kept in mind while designing the interiors of the space, which therefore should have some consistency. The core theme should always be kept in view.

Balance: This means appropriately arranging items in a given space. It is important to position objects with similar visual appeal at cautiously selected positions to get that ideal balance from a specific point. Balance can be of three kinds. The first is symmetrical, which is the most traditional, and the easiest to achieve. Asymmetrical is the second type of balance, which is quite trendy, but requires a lot of thought and creativity. The last is radial, which is attained by using a central point or object from which the other pieces seem to radiate.

Proportion: This deals with sizes of different articles in relation to one another. It is important that a majority of articles in a space be proportional to each other. The absence of proportion will make certain pieces of furniture look out of place, while certain others will be left overshadowed, which will significantly hamper the overall attractiveness of the room.

Focus: A focal point in interior design of a room is vital for its appeal. What type of focal object you select is up to you. It could be something like a nice painting or a furniture item. The item must be such that it is important in the overall design of the room and is able to attract the attention of the observer. It must look attractive, but not look out of place.

Rhythm: Having a rhythm too is very essential for achieving a good design. The design must appear to flow according to a pattern from one point to another. Using a lot of curves, ornate walls or floors, decorative fixtures at carefully chosen distances, alternate shades etc can help accomplish a discernible rhythm.

Interior designing of a space will be coherent if these basic guidelines are taken into consideration. It is always advisable to take help from an interior design expert to assist you on these aspects and all the nuances.
