I was asked a while back by a new member of my team what I would do if I was brand new all over again to the online network market or affiliate sales business. What would be my first steps to get up and running?

It’s a great question that really got me thinking.

With no list of prospects, without a webpage and zero experience, where would I go to get started?

It’s a detailed subject so I’ll keep it to the basics. Here’s what I’d do if starting over again.

First, I would set about building an email list to market to.

It can be done in several ways but here’s how I’d do it.

I would use pay per click advertising and a quick capture page to gather a list of prospects. Buy a domain name, use elance.com to hire a techie to build a capture page for you for cheap. Purchase a home business related report from a reputable plr site to use as an incentive for people to give you their contact information then use ads on Yahoo, MSN and Google to drive traffic to your page.

If you really have a budget, I highly recommend hiring a private firm to do the pay per click for you. It’s not cheap but results are pretty much guaranteed. Otherwise, patience, trial and error and determination will see you fairly successful and putting together a pay per click campaign in short order.

My budget when I started was small and I quickly wasted it on paid ads that didn’t work. From there I started to discover other marketing methods that while they worked a lot slower once up and running were far more effective than paid advertising. Sometimes, slow is good.

Article marketing is often overlooked by today’s gurus but you know what it works like a charm (why do think I’m writing this?). Here’s a tip to greatly expedite matters. Either write or hire a free lancer off elance.com to write some for you. Post the original article to ezinearticles.com, then take that story and check out uniquearticlewizard.com. It’s a monthly subscription of around $70 but it’s the best money you’ll ever spend. What it will do is mass submit your articles to hundreds of directories all over the web. This give you 100s of back links to your site. If you don’t know what this means, don’t worry it’s all good. This combined with a little keyword research will have your pages ranking at the top of Google in no time.

Here’s why I think the traffic you get from articles is vastly superior to traffic from paid advertising. Paid ads work but they also drive a lot looky loo’s and tire kickers to your site. This is doubly frustrating as these folks don’t buy whatever you have for sale and they cost you money to get there in the first place. By getting your site ranked and on or near the top of Google, you’ll attract a more highly focused viewer who is more genuinely interested in what you have to offer. My experience and testing has shown far greater response from the folks who found my sites through the search engines as opposed to pay per click ads.
