Push Email: Always On

Filed in: Internet Business by Greg Black on 07-20-09

The most commonly used method of communication between businesses or individuals is rapidly becoming email. It leaves a usable record of communications that transpired and is effective and simple to use. Push email has completely changed the process of using different tools and options developed by email providers to access email on a server. These changes have generated new methods that have made mobile email more convenient and useful.

Push email gives a user instant access to any and all new email received on the server. Even on the road, the user never has to worry about missing out on an important message because the responsibility to check for new mail has been completely delegated to the push email system.

How does push email work compared to traditional email protocols? The answer is in the way messages are received by the server and then sent out again. In a traditional POP3 system (Post Office Protocol) the user or the client logs into an email program that queries the email server to find out if there is any new mail available. If there are new messages (at logon or at regular intervals) the protocol will download it onto the client’s computer.

Push email does not need to regularly make checks by the user or by the computer for new emails. When the mail server receives a new email, it automatically “pushes” the message out to the inbox to notify that a new email has been received. Hence the name: push email. This feature is very convenient for anyone who is away from their office frequently but still is very reliant on receiving their emails.

Push email really showed up on the scene of the market when handheld devices became directly connected with mobile productivity. A PDA or smart phone handheld device can be the recipient of your push emails so that you can have access to your emails even when there is not a computer to log in to. Most modern mobile devices and phones will allow a user to receive, read, write, edit and even delete messages as if they were in front of a computer.

The push email protocol may not be for everyone but for those needing to stay connected it may be one of the most productive services available. Handheld and mobile devices differ so it is important to research which services and features you would be in need of and purchase a push email enabled device accordingly. Keep in mind reliable connections and features while comparing devices.
